Introduction:
---What Is A Gaited Horse And What Can You Do With It?

Home --- That's the page that took you to this site map.                                                                                               This page has a thumbnail collection of many of the
pictures that can be found on this site.

JF Ranch ----This page has pictures of our Paso Fino / NASHA stallion at work and others around the ranch.
It tells you how we raise and train our horses.
We breed and train a small number of gaited horses on a large cattle ranch in the beautiful foot hills of northern British Columbia, Canada. Our goal is to sell well trained and sure-footed horses that are experienced trail horses, love people, are easy to handle and ride, and have outstanding conformation, endurance, and gaiting ability.

  Our Horses
---Horses for sale, Future Sale Horses, Breeding Stock (our stallion and brood mares).
Pictures of the horses and links to the pedigrees.

Paso Finos ---Information about Paso Finos.
Paso Finos are very unique and quite different from the better known Peruvian Paso, with whom they share some ancestors.
This page includes information about the Paso Fino's heritage, gaits and endearing character, the different types within the breed and what qualities we look for.

 Single-Footing Horses
---This page has information about
North American Single Footing Horses (NASHA).

This is a fairly new association which strives to recreate the versatile and beloved gaited traveling horse of the past, by crossing selected horses from gaited breeds.
A great no-nonsense association that believes a gaited horse should be bred for trail riding rather than gaited shows, and should be able to compete against non gaited horses in disciplines like gymkhana, reining, jumping, team penning and trail events.
We use Paso Fino X Quarter Horse mares, and some selected Quarter Horse mares, to breed to our Paso Fino stallion to get great ranch or trail horses. The ones that inherit gait are eligible to be registered with the NASHA, if they pass the strict requirements regarding conformation and range in gait (evaluation done by video).

Getting Along
--- Training and riding your gaited horse.

Getting along with your gaited horse can and should be easy.
You pay extra for a horse that can give you a super smooth ride, and with a little know - how and effort you will get that special ride every time!
Should the gaited horse be allowed to trot under saddle?
How feeding affects the horse's temperament.
Things to do or not to do when riding gaited horses,
and much more.
TRAINING METHODS FOR THE GAITED HORSE :
Natural Horsemanship - English - Western - Traditional Paso Fino:
What's right for you?

Old Paso Fino Bloodlines
--- Famous Paso Finos that lived long ago and left their stamp on the breed.
Colombians and Puerto Ricans differed in their preferences when it came to their favorite horses.

  Gaits
--- Equine gaits: the basics.
The walk , trot and pace, 4 beat gaits of gaited horses and the speeds they are performed at, shifts towards pace or trot in the gaited horse, canter and gallop.
There are pictures (mostly our own horses) and a drawing from a video still, and descriptions of what motion the rider feels.
Fino, Corto, Largo, Trocha, Single foot, Running Walk, Amble, Fox-trot, Flying Pace, Toelt and others.
This is great basic knowledge which helps understand how gaited horses move and what makes them so smooth.
Gaits from other gaited breeds are included as much as possible, because even though they all have different names and often a distinctive style, they differ little in the basic way they are performed, and horses don't always stick to the style approved for their breed!
Pictures make it easy to follow the footfall sequence and see what changes take place when the horse changes to a faster speed.
